The Mystery of SAMBA revealed.

At least a mystery if you are a Windows refugee like me! Setting up SAMBA is easy reads every Internet post I could find. Two years of futzing with smb.conf and nothing! Then it occurred to me, I don't run a domain. I don't need network security, my wife and I are the only users! So I approached the smb.conf with a fresh viewpoint.WARNING! The following setup is NOT secure and should only be used in small home networks and only long enough to grow into an understanding of SAMBA…See More

9.04, 9.04 MINT, UBUNTU XUBUNTU and a Debian machine Pt#1

Despite my title, I will try to be brief. The last few weeks have brought many unexpected installs. Coming from a Windows background, I am very pleased as you know with Linux. One of the benefits of Linux has been it's stability and resilience to misuse. OK, I made that up, but those are the reasons I love Linux. While continually testing all variants of the OS, I have remained in the Debian based UBUNTU branch of the family tree. Personally while I see the benefit of using UBUNTU in a…See More

Running the Kindle PC software on Linux!

It seems that everyone around me is getting the Kindle Reader from Amazon.com. I would like one too, but it's not a priority on my budget list at this time. I noticed that there is a Kindle for the PC as a free download. That's not very helpful if like me you are running Linux. But alas, we have Wine do we not? So I downloaded the most recent installer for Kindle for the PC from Amazon and it installed without a whimper. But, to my disappointment, it would not launch. Some quick searches on the…See More

REVOLUTION - X40 - T22, Running Linux Mint7 and Bride of Frankenstein in Pink

-------11-11-09

I am on a mission. I have made a career out of supporting MS Windows and now I want to revolt. I want to free the hardware from an addiction of expensive and unreliable, CPU demanding software. I want to keep old PC's out of the landfill. I want to be able to provide close friends and relatives with quality PC's that provide an affordable, hassle free online and offline experience, using leading edge technology.

Recently I have acquired a few eBay…

Have you tried to convert anyone to Linux? What was their experience?

The best advertisement is word of mouth. The main leg of Linux growth is in the personal introduction to Linux by trusted IT friends. If you are the 'Computer Guy Next Door', then you would be the…Continue

What is your favorite Linux distro and why?

Although I am an Ubuntu fan, I use the Ubuntu derivatives more often than not. What's your favorite?

Locate your 'Package Manager'  Type in a key word or phrase describing what you want, and if it exists it will be listed.  Mark for installation, Install.  Best of all it's FREE!  The software comes from managed repositories, so the software is safe and virus free.  Other sources:  Google: Picasa - Skype: Chat and telephone. All free!
